On-Island Operator, Local Support (Vietnam)

Bac Ai Nguyen is 76 years old and is married to Nguyen Thi Cat. They have 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren. He was educated as a radio technology engineer. In 1970 he took additional courses in engineering education at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany). In his professional life, he started as an employee for an electric power provider, then he was a teacher and ultimately was Director of the Post and Telecommunication Training Center in Ho Chi Minh City. He retired 16 years ago.

He started with ham radio as a hobby in December 1989. Since 1996 he has been President of the Amateur Radio Club of Ho Chi Minh City and is currently correspondent for IARU Region 3 in Vietnam. He has also attended the International Amateur Radio Women Meeting in Berlin. In 1997 he participated in the 10th IARU Region 3 Conference in Beijing and the IOTA DXpedition to Condao Island (Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). In 2001 he visited the Ham Radio Exhibition in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and took part in the IOTA DXpedition to Hon Tam Island (Khanh Hoa Province). In 2002 he was invited to visit the Ham Fair in Tokyo.

Since 2002 he has served as the President of the Vietnam Amateur Radio Club. He has instructed approximately 100 newcomers and issued the Amateur Radio Operator’s Certificate. He operates primarily SSB along with some CW and SSTV using the calls XV2A and 3W6AR.

He has presented many ideas to help the Ministry for Information and Communication in issuing new amateur radio regulations, and he continues to work continually to increase ham radio activity in Vietnam.
