AA1MI/HB9DST • Paul Schreier
On-Island Operator, Sponsoring, Spiderbeams, Communications

An American who has lived in Switzerland since 2001, Paul was born in 1951 and is married with two daughters. He was educated as an electrical engineer at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) and has spent most of his professional life working as a technical journalist including several years as the chief editor of EDN magazine and 15 years as the founding editor of Personal Engineering magazine. Today he also works as a translator.

Paul was first licensed as a Novice in 1968. After being sidetracked in later years by family and professional obligations, he again picked up the hobby in the 1990s and was re-licensed with the Extra Class call AA1MI. He was active in the Port City Amateur Radio Club (W1WQM) where he also served as president for several years.

Paul spends most of his time QRP CW. While in New Hampshire, he earned his QRP-DXCC and QRPp-WAS (milliwatt Worked All States). After moving to Switzerland he joined a number of clubs including the Helvetia Telegraphy Club (HB9HC) and USKA, the Swiss national ham-radio organization.

A ham highlight was coordinating a successful ARISS contact with the International Space Station as the technical director for the Zurich International School Amateur Radio Club (HB9ZIS). One of his favorite activities is the annual Swiss National Mountain Day contest, which for the past few years he has operated while overlooking Lake Maggiore in Switzerland's Italian-speaking region of Ticino.
